Mothers don’t just raise children, they nurture the future of entire communities
From our first breath, mothers became our first teachers, nurturers, and moral compasses. Their influence extends far beyond home, shaping the character of entire generations. Mothers often juggle careers, household duties, and religious upbringings, while ensuring their children grow up with strong ethics and compassion. Their quiet sacrifices build the foundation of a society. It is only apt that we take every opportunity to celebrate these important figures in our lives, such as Mother’s Day.
Islam recognises their great sacrifice. The Quran repeatedly emphasises the sacred duty of believers to honour parents, with special reverence for mothers; “We have commanded people to honour their parents. Their mothers bore them in hardship and delivered them in hardship.” (Al-Ahqaf, 46: 15)
Prophet Muhammad SAW also highlighted a mother’s supreme status in a hadith from Abu Hurairah RA where a man asked the Prophet, “O Messenger of Allah, who is the most deserving of my good treatment?” The Prophet answered: “Your mother, again your mother, again your mother, then your father.” (Sahih Muslim: 2548)
This profound teaching reminds us that a mother’s sacrifices warrant incomparable gratitude.

Heroic Mothers in Islamic History
The annals of Islamic history shine with the stories of extraordinary women whose strength, faith, and sacrifice as mothers shaped the course of nations. These remarkable figures faced immense challenges with unwavering trust in Allah, leaving behind timeless lessons for all generations.
Hajar (AS)’s story is an example of profound faith as she desperately searched for water in the barren valley of Makkah between the hills of Safa and Marwa seven times, trusting in Allah’s mercy to provide for her infant Prophet Ismail (AS). Her perseverance was rewarded with the miraculous Zamzam spring, and her footsteps became immortalised as an essential rite of Hajj. Her story teaches us that a mother’s determination can turn the most desolate situations into blessings.
Maryam (AS) exemplified piety, courage, and complete submission to the divine will. She faced societal scorn after miraculously giving birth to Prophet Isa (AS) without a father. Yet, she bore this trial with patience and dignity, trusting Allah’s promise to protect and provide for her. Her story is recounted in Surah Maryam, reminding us that a mother’s faith can sustain us through life’s most difficult tests.
Khadijah (RA), Prophet Muhammad’s first wife and mother to their children, played multiple pivotal roles – loving mother, devoted wife, and Islam’s first believer. She balanced her roles with remarkable grace and provided unwavering emotional and financial support when the Prophet faced intense persecution, creating a stable home where Islam’s message could take root. Her legacy shows how mothers can be both nurturing caregivers and pillars of strength during times of adversity. She is the prime example of the art of mothers juggling multiple roles.
Honouring Mothers Beyond Mother’s Day
While special occasions such as this remind us to appreciate mothers, Islam teaches us that honouring them is a daily obligation. We can show gratitude to our mothers in meaningful ways such as:
- Time: The most precious gift – be fully present when with her
- Prayers: Regularly make dua for her well-being
- Service: Anticipate her needs before she asks
- Legacy: Live in ways that make her proud
Mothers are the silent architects of civilisation – their love builds nations; their sacrifices often go unseen. This Mother’s Day, remember to appreciate them in ways that go beyond commercial gestures and embody the Quranic command of lifelong kindness. As the saying goes, paradise lies at mothers’ feet – the highest honour for humanity’s most sacred role. Ouch! wishes all mothers Happy Mother’s Day! May your love be returned manifold, your sacrifices recognised, and your legacy eternal.
“My Lord, have mercy on them, just as they cared for me when I was little.” (Al-Isra,17:24)
