How Aidiladha Inspires the Spirit of Takaful

Divine mercy and the responsibility of shared security

Hari Raya Aidiladha, or Hari Raya Haji, is one of the most important days in the Islamic calendar, carrying profound lessons about faith, sacrifice, and divine mercy. At its core, this sacred occasion teaches us that true faith is tested through sacrifice, but divine mercy ensures no believer is left unprotected.

These values mirror the principles of takaful: mutual assistance, shared responsibility, and ethical protection. As we reflect on the story of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and the rituals of Hari Raya Haji, we uncover timeless wisdom that aligns with the mission of Takaful to create a halal, community-driven safety net for all.

Cooperate in goodness and righteousness, but do not cooperate in sin and transgression.” (Al-Maaidah, 5:2)

1. The story of Ibrahim: Divine protection through faith and community

Hari Raya Aidiladha commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s (AS) unwavering belief in Allah SWT after he was commanded in a dream to sacrifice his beloved son, Ismail (AS). Prophet Ibrahim (AS), out of complete submission, was prepared to obey.

But at the decisive moment, Allah SWT replaced Ismail with a ram – demonstrating divine mercy in response to sincere obedience. This moment teaches us that when believers act with full trust and righteousness, they are never abandoned.

In the same way, takaful operates on the principle that no one should bear the burden of loss alone. Contributions made with good intent become a source of protection for others, especially in times of need.

2. Qurban (sacrifice): A model for structured mutual aid

The qurban ritual itself is not an individual act but a collective obligation with strict ethical guidelines. Such as that only healthy animals may be sacrificed, and the meat must be distributed fairly among family, friends, and those in need.

Qurban institutionalises the idea that resources must be pooled and redistributed to protect the vulnerable. This structured form of charity reflects Takaful’s operational principles, where transparent rules govern distribution and payout.

A takaful product like Pusara Pro creates a financial safety net accessible to all participants, especially those facing financial hardships. This structured approach reflects Islam’s emphasis on organised and ethical solidarity, whether in worship or finance.

3. Hajj: Levelling the playing field

As millions of Muslims gather in Mecca for their pilgrimage, the rituals of Hajj including tawaf, sa’i, and standing in Arafat, are all performed collectively. Every pilgrim wears the simple white garments (ihram or telekung) to symbolise equality before Allah SWT.

Taking cue from this principle, Takaful also aims to eliminate financial vulnerability through partaking in tabbaru’ and donating a portion of their contribution to the Community Pool. No one is left behind, whether in the plains of Arafat or in times of financial crisis.

Takaful: Modern application of Aidiladha’s values

Aidiladha calls for more than remembrance; it calls for action. It reminds us that solutions to hardship lie not in isolation, but in unity. The distribution of qurban meat and the collective recitation of takbir reflect a society designed to move together as one.

Takaful offers a modern application of these values in the realm of financial security. Unlike conventional insurance, which can be seen as profiting from others’ misfortune, Takaful is grounded in mutual aid, shared risk, and ethical responsibility. Through initiatives like Ouch! Pusara Pro, these values come to life, providing a halal, inclusive safety net for all.
