Deepavali: Weaving the Tapestry of Unity in the Malaysian Community

Deepavali festive season, also known as the Festival of Lights, is here! While rooted in the ancient myth that marks the triumph of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance, the Deepavali celebration holds the profound message of care, unity, and the critical importance of community support.

During the Deepavali season, Malaysia is reminded of the rich cultural tapestry that defines the uniqueness of our country.

A Joyous Light Celebration

The word “Deepavali” is derived from Sanskrit, which means rows of lighted lamps. During this joyous occasion, homes and malls in Malaysia are decorated with vibrant lights, colourful kolam, rangoli, and various tasty sweets. This tradition is more than just a religious practice; it is a celebration that brings the community together in an act of inclusion and hospitality.

Deepavali is a time when the importance of family, friendship, and community is reinforced. Many households, temples, and sometimes community areas host open houses where relatives, friends, neighbours, and people of all faiths and backgrounds are invited to brighten the festivity. Vegetarian meals are prepared on the Deepavali day as a sign of purity and devotion.

Of course, speaking of meals, no festivity is complete without its iconic food spread. Among the foods synonymous with Deepavali and a staple for homes are murrukku, a crunchy and savoury snack, and laddoo.

Other than that, biryani rice and mutton curry are among the dishes people look forward to during this festive season. As Malaysians, we are lucky to indulge in these delights during and outside of the festive season. They are finger-licking good!

Sustaining the Light: Boosting Community Resilience

In a world where daily life can pull us in many different directions, Deepavali serves as a moment to pause and reconnect with loved ones. It is a unique moment when individuals actively forgive past grievances and come together in celebration.

Families and friends, even those from far away, get together and enjoy conversations over a variety of food and snacks. Furthermore, it is good to care for our loved ones, especially the elderly or sick family members, and ensure they do not feel excluded from the joyous environment.

While many are busy buying various decorations, foods, and services for Deepavali preparation, this phenomenon provides a much-needed boost to the local communities. The weeks leading up to the festival observe an influx in shopping, which benefits the small businesses, street vendors, and artisans.

For a niche artisan, such as those who create traditional clothing and jewellery, handcrafted gifts, and even kolam, the festive season is a crucial time for them to get the most out of their income. By purchasing their products, we indirectly provide our support to the community and allow them to enjoy the jubilant occasion. This strengthens the social and economic fabric of the community, which leads to community resilience.

Thread of Light in the Community

As we enjoy the Festival of Lights with various cuisines and a good time with family and friends, remember that every small act of care towards other people is a thread of light that weaves into the tapestry of community well-being. One of the heartwarming aspects of Deepavali is its ability to bring people closer together. It is an opportunity to deepen the family bonds and remind us of the importance of unity.

Remember to take care of your health and eating behaviour to avoid any unexpected complications. Happy Deepavali!
